| Nanakuli High receives donations for performing arts ... - Honolulu Advertiser Posted: 07 Apr 2010 10:51 AM PDT The Nanakuli High and Intermediate School Performing Arts Center (NPAC) received donations from Hawaiian Electric Company, HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union, and Makaha Studios to help meet and exceed the $5000 gift given by the Hawaii Arts Alliance. With the matching donations, the NPAC received an additional $5000 from the Hawaii Arts Alliance. The monetary donation from the Hawaii Arts Alliance came from an anonymous donor to support high school arts education. NPAC and seven other performing arts learning centers received an initial donation of $5000 with a challenge of matching the initial donation to receive a second installment of $5000. "We are so grateful for the very generous donation as it will help keep the NPAC going on to next year. This program has taught me so many skills that I can use after high school, but even more important, it provides me a venue to apply the skills I learned into a real project, which are our performances," said Shannon Peahi-Ching, senior. Chanel Smith, sophomore, said, "The NPAC has helped me become more confident and has taught me how to carry myself in front of people. I learned how to work with others, problem solve, and to be a creative thinker. It's not all about acting, singing, and dancing." The NPAC and other Department of Education Learning Centers are in danger of losing their funding due to budget cuts, thus the Hawaii Arts Alliance donation and matching funds come at a very critical time. "If our Learning Center allocation gets cut, we will not be able to offer the same services and activities we have in the past. Besides our school productions, we give students opportunities to perform at various venues and functions that, at the minimum, require monies for bus transportation. The NPAC also uses funds to pay for costumes, sets, royalties, equipment, and supplies for various productions and performances. One such production is "RENT, School Edition" which opens on Friday, April 9, 2010 and runs till April 18, 2010. For more information or to provide support, go to www.nhispac.com or call 668-5823, ext. 256. "We hope people can come out to our production of RENT and see what the students have learned and find out why keeping the NPAC Learning Center alive is important," said, Nathaniel Hedin, senior.
