Sin, a new comedy based on Isaac Bashevis Singer's short story "The Unseen," which has been adapted by Mark Altman, officially opens March 17 at the Baruch Performing Arts Center's Rose Nagelberg Theatre in Manhattan.

Directed by Kent Paul, the production, which began previews March 9, features Marilyn Chris, Paul Collins, Jessiee Datino, Pierre Epstein, Sarah Grace Wilson and Grant James Varjas.

Playwright Altman, according to press notes, "brings the devil, demons and infidelity center stage in Sin, a new comedy that pits a happily married couple against the devil himself. On Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year, the devil and his demons descend on the tiny town of Frampol. Satan has chosen this most solemn of occasions to test the faith of a happily married couple and in the process ruins their lives. It's a devilish look at two love triangles, one human and one heavenly."

The production features sets by Michael Locher, lights by Matthew McCarthy and costumes by China Lee. Mark Stuart is the associate director; Robert Rees has composed music for the show.

Performances are scheduled for Tuesdays at 7 PM, Wednesdays-Saturdays at 8 PM with matinees on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 2 PM and Sundays at 3 PM.

The Baruch Performing Arts Center's Rose Nagelberg Theatre is located at 55 Lexington Avenue at 25th Street in Manhattan. Tickets are $50 during previews and $60 beginning March 17; premium seats are also available.

Summer school: Performing arts come to Cardiff - Glenwood Springs Post Independent

Posted: 16 Mar 2010 10:37 PM PDT

A pair of local characters is getting set to begin a new phase of existence for the Historic Cardiff School House in south Glenwood Springs.

Jack Green and Bob Willey, two longtime activists in the local theatrical scene, have teamed up to present a variety of shows at the old school, which is located in the Park East subdivision, next to the Roaring Fork River.

Under the name Camp Chair Productions (named for the expedient of having the audience bring their own camp chair to sit on), the pair will be producing a series of plays and other events at the school house starting in mid-April.

The first production is to be a set of short, comedic plays written by Green, Willey and another longtime local, Joe Mollica, scheduled for April 15-17.

Following the opening weekend, Camp Chair Productions hopes to attract other local talent to put on shows, ranging from comedy to drama to live music to live readings of poetry or prose.

The plan is not so ambitious as to predict events every weekend, Willey said, but the hope is for "as many as we can get between April and September ... and make that little school house come alive again."

This will be the second season of events at the historic school house, which was moved from its original location and renovated by Dick Helmke and Marice Doll a few years ago.

Green, who met with Helmke and Doll after they had finished working on the building, put on a series of events last year.

"So this is our second season," he remarked with some glee on Tuesday.

In addition to the productions being planned by Champ Chair, the duo of Green and Willey plan to get involved in the summer-long celebration of Glenwood Springs' 125th anniversary.

"Here's one more element [to answer the question], 'What can you do in Glenwood in the summertime?'" Willey said.

But for this summer's events, Willey said, the audience won't need to bring their own chairs.

Thanks to Broadway Center for free 'Dream On' concert ... - Tacoma News Tribune

'+'>'); } -->

If I may be so bold as to speak for the "arts community," thanks David Fischer of the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts for sponsoring "Dream On," a free concert to be performed Thursday evening as part of Tacoma's Third Thursday's Artwalk. The ad, in last Friday's GO section was an attention-getter and informative. Readers might be hearing about Artwalk for the first time and I am certain this promotion will bolster attendance and the efforts of gallery owners, museums and arts venues. Thank you Broadway Center for the Performing Arts in attracting art and music lovers downtown. We are an arts town!

Lynn Di Nino, Tacoma
