| Performing Arts: Rehearsal Versus Performance (Judy ... - The Moderate Voice Posted: 28 Mar 2010 08:33 AM PDT As a performer, I experience what performers throughout time have experienced: the rehearsals can be tedious, or focus on rote, or focus on getting down specific words, movements or music. But that magic — that "organic" quality that makes it seem as if it has not been carefully rehearsed (often over and over and over) — is what usually emerges in live performance so audiences never know the work that went into it before. Here's a perfect glimpse of the process. Watch Judy Garland doing her run through for an ABC 1966 Hollywood Palace variety show (singing one of the more grating songs of that era). Some of it is perfunctory. She forgets the words. The energy is not at full throttle. And then watch her doing it for the actual show (at this point in her career her voice was not at its best and she had a long history of alcohol and drug abuse, which eventually killed her). Notice the difference. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction. |
| Alyce Dumke, John Gilbert and Walter Rugland honored ... - Post-Crescent Posted: 28 Mar 2010 06:31 AM PDT The Fox Cities Performing Arts Center presented its Distinguished Service Awards to Alyce Dumke, John Gilbert and Walter Rugland at the center's annual Chairman's Dinner last week. The Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals who provide outstanding service to the center as a nonprofit organization. Their service will be recognized on a Distinguished Service Awards plaque on display in the center's main lobby. Dumke became involved with the center in 1999 while working for the former Aid Association for Lutherans. In 1999, Dumke was selected as AAL's loaned executive to the budding Fox Cities Performing Arts Center project. Gilbert played a key role in the creation of the Fox Cities PAC as AAL's president and chief operating officer during the center's formative years. Rugland has been a strong advocate for the Fox Cities PAC since its inception. He played an important role, along with Gilbert, in securing the lead gift to build the center as part of AAL's centennial anniversary. As a founding board member and the center's only secretary and treasurer, Rugland continues to work diligently to secure support for the center. His dedicated guidance and experience as an actuary has shaped the center's financial framework, building for a strong financial future. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Andrew Adler | Performing arts 'season' less relevant - Courier-Journal Posted: 27 Mar 2010 11:57 PM PDT [fivefilters.org: unable to retrieve full-text content] I wonder if it's time to rethink the notion of a performing arts season. Maybe it's because the calendar is deceptive and increasingly irrelevant. In the days of yore, groups launched their schedules in September and completed them in May. But how ... |
| World Renowned Shen Yun Performing Arts Arrives in ... - The Epoch Times Posted: 28 Mar 2010 12:33 AM PDT DUBLIN—Artists from the New York based Shen Yun Performing Arts Touring Company on Saturday arrived in Dublin where preparations were being finalised for their eagerly-awaited inaugural performance in Ireland. Due to the lack of a theatre that meets all the requirements to host Shen Yun, the local organizers had been unable to invite Shen Yun to their city. This year however the completion of the state of the art Grand Canal Theatre has made it possible for the show to make it's début in Ireland. Many dignitaries have already sent well wishes to Shen Yun Performing Arts ahead of its performance in Dublin. Dublin's Lord Mayor, Ms. Emer Costello, wrote, "I welcome Shen Yun Performing Arts to Dublin. Dublin is a city that values culture and the arts...I wish Shen Yun Performing Arts a warm Dublin welcome and hope that they enjoy the time they will spend in our city," said Ms Costello. "It is a real honour and a privilege to welcome to Ireland for the first time Shen Yun," said Senator Joe O'Toole. Many other wishes have been received such as that from Senator David Norris: "As a Dubliner I am delighted to welcome Shen Yun Performing Arts to this great European city which has given so much to the culture of the world especially in literary terms. I have seen video recordings of some of their programme and the elegance and brilliance of the dance is quite remarkable. I am sure they will be greatly appreciated by the Irish public." Shen Yun Performing Arts will have two shows on Sunday in Dublin's Grand Canal Theatre. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
