Washington Performing Arts Society announces star ... - Weblogs.baltimoresun.com

Looks like the Washington Performing Arts Society will be batting a "Thousand" during its 2010-11 season. The lineup includes a performance in October of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 -- the one nicknamed "Symphony of a Thousand" because of the forces required -- conducted by Valery Gergiev, leading the Mariinsky Orchestra and Choral Arts Society of Washington. This is bound to be one hot ticket (speaking of which, WPAS season subscriptions go on sale Friday).

Another Russian orchestra is on the schedule, this one led by the man who gave Gergiev his first big break years ago -- Yuri Temirkanov. Remember him? He has canceled so many guest-conducting engagements in the States in recent years, including with his former orchestra in Baltimore, that he seems quite the stranger now. But he's likely to be at the helm of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic when it performs Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1 (with Alicia Weilerstein) and Brahms' Fourth at Strathmore for WPAS in April 2011.

And speaking of missing maestros, there's

Shen Yun Performing Arts Welcomed to Calgary - The Epoch Times

Posted: 30 Mar 2010 12:45 AM PDT

CALGARY, Canada—After a five-show run in Vancouver, Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company is now headed to Calgary, the hometown of the world-renowned Calgary Stampede.

Calgary is the largest city in the Province of Alberta and was the first city in Canada to host the Olympic Winter Games back in 1988.

Calgary is also the home city of Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper and minister of citizenship, immigration, and multiculturalism Jason Kenney, both of whom had issued letters earlier in the year welcoming Shen Yun Performing Arts to Canada.

"On behalf of the Government of Canada, please accept my best wishes for a memorable experience," wrote Mr. Harper for those attending Shen Yun.

"By attending an event such as Shen Yun Performing Arts, we are all given the opportunity to share and appreciate the various traditions of our families, friends and neighbours," wrote Mr. Kenney.

Other federal MPs in Calgary have welcomed the show due to start at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium on Tuesday March 30.

"Calgarians are indeed fortunate to be able to witness once again this classical Chinese dance and musical extravaganza, which explores 5,000 years of traditional culture," Calgary East MP Deepak Obhrai wrote in a statement.

Lee Richardson, MP from Calgary Centre, also praised Shen Yun for visiting Calgary.

"The Shen Yun Performing Arts preserves and promotes the tradition and beauty of the Chinese culture through many exciting elements including music, song, dance and the magic of storytelling," he wrote.

A number of Calgary-based MLAs including David Swann, Moe Amery, Ron Liepert, Heather Forsyth, Kent Hehr, Rob Anderson, and Richard Marz also issued statements welcoming Shen Yun to their city.

"Shen Yun Performing Arts came into being with a vision of fostering a renaissance in Chinese culture. Four years later, the show has achieved that and so much more," wrote David Swann, MLA, Calgary-Mountain View.

"What better way to celebrate the tradition of multiculturalism than to have such an internationally renowned troupe of artists performing for Albertans," expressed Moe Amery, MLA, Calgary East.

Calgary Aldermen Jim Stevenson, Joe Connelly, Druh Farrell, and Andre Chabot also greeted Shen Yun and encouraged those attending the show.

"On behalf of the City of Calgary, it is with great pleasure that I extend the warmest of greetings and best wishes to the Shen Yun Performing Arts 2010 World Tour," wrote Joe Connelly, Alderman, City of Calgary Ward 6.

"Calgarians will be awed by the beauty and human dignity expressed through this performance," said Druh Farrell, Alderman, City of Calgary Ward 7.

City officials from the surrounding municipalities also expressed their pleasure for Shen Yun's Calgary visit by issuing congratulatory letters.

"I am certain that everyone in attendance will enjoy this splendid celebration of Chinese heritage and culture," wrote Truper McBride, Mayor of Cochrane.

Norman Boucher, Mayor of Medicine Hat and Judy Dahl, Mayor of Town of Olds, also issued welcome letters for the show.

The show was also welcomed to Calgary by a number of other public figures including Pat Cochrane, Chair of Calgary Board of Education and Heather Douglas, President and CEO of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce.

Shen Yun Performing Arts International Company will be playing for three days at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium from March 30-April 1.

Casa Manana, Performing Arts Fort Worth plan shows with ... - Dallas Morning News

Posted: 29 Mar 2010 09:53 PM PDT

FORT WORTH – Casa Mañana and Performing Arts Fort Worth have announced separate 2010-11 Broadway seasons, but each with the same goal in mind: crowd-pleasing, mainstream entertainment that will bring families to the theater.

The season announcements come after a report that the performing-arts organizations are ending a 12-year arrangement in which they shared revenue from touring Broadway shows that they co-presented at Bass Performance Hall.

While neither collection of shows boasts any huge marquee stars, all present cozily familiar entertainment.

Performing Arts Fort Worth's Bass Hall season highlights include Disney's fairy-tale love story Beauty and the Beast, a Broadway hit making its Fort Worth debut; the all-new Cirque Dreams Illumination, from the creators of Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy; the Tony-winning A Chorus Line; Australia's Ten Tenors chorus; and the Dolly Parton-scored 9 to 5: The Musical, also making its Fort Worth debut.

"If I had to point to one theme throughout our season, it is most definitely family-oriented fun," says Dione Kennedy, president and chief executive officer of Performing Arts Fort Worth. "Part of our motivation for how we planned this season is that in this current economic climate and time in our country, I felt we needed to bring in things to the community that would allow more families to attend shows together."

Casa Mañana will produce the Tim Rice-Andrew Lloyd Webber hit Jesus Christ Superstar at Bass Hall. (As producer, the organization creates the entire show – as opposed to presenting it, which means that the organization puts on a show that someone else is producing.)

Casa, under the guidance of president and executive producer Wally Jones, also will present a slate of Broadway touring shows at its silver-domed theater, including the Fort Worth return of actress Ruta Lee in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

The schedule also includes Broadway favorites Hairspray, The Sound of Music and another winning Tim Rice-Andrew Lloyd Webber collaboration, Evita.

Subscriptions for both series are on sale now.
